10 Web Applications for Small Business

Two of the most important factors for the small business owner when investing in tools are cost savings, and increased efficiency.  Also important factors for many are adaptability, and functionality.

Todays small business and home business owners are finding those requirements met via web based applications.  As these apps become more mainstream and powerful, small business owners are relying on these savvy tools to help their businesses grow and run more smoothly. These top mobile and web apps can get you organized, connected and visible, and they will help contribute to your success:

1. Evernote – Evernote works with nearly every computer, phone and mobile device out there. Search by keyword, tag or even printed and handwritten text inside images.  Evernotes greatest feat is the ability to capture notes, pics, any kind of data – anywhere!  That same data is then available to you wherever/whenever you need it, from whatever device you are using.  Now there is Evernote Business which adds even more team collaboration.

2. Google Apps/Calendar/Drive – Unless you are already financially committed to the Microsoft Office family, you need to take a look at what Google offers.  From their intuitive, accessible anywhere, complete office suite, to their cloud storage offering, to their lauded calendar integration, and email, Google has what your business needs to be cost efficient and productive.

3. Dropbox – Dropbox is arguably the most popular cloud based storage service in use today.  It’s ease of use, Free 2GB entry level account, and  ability to access from nearly any device make it a valuable resource in productivity.  For more info on cloud storage and alternatives, check our blog post!

4. Ring Central – an alternative to Google Voice that is popular in the business sector for call management.  This is a great way to add professional level call management features to your business without adding top level costs to your bottom line. Extensions, hold music, virtual numbers, voicemail to email, and ringing multiple lines for a single extension are all features that can make your small business stand out.

5. Remember the Milk – Have you ever tied string around your finger to remind yourself of something but then forgot what it was? Remember the milk can help you and your company remember all of the days important details. The app will let you set and receive reminders via email, SMS and IM and to minimize the total number of apps you’re running independently on a daily basis, Remember the Milk even works as an add-on to Google Calendar.

6. LinkedIn – It builds on the concept of six degrees of separation, which says that every human being is connected to every other human being through at most 6 people. Entering into a network means being able to take advantage of business opportunities, asking for, or offering advice, and letting people in your network know about your projects. The best part? You’re connected to everyone that your direct connections are networked with. That means that you can quickly expand your contacts and develop your professional reputation with minimal effort, since you already have something in common with the other person.

7. Mailchimp – MailChimp is free up to a 500 user mailing list. It will allow you to manage email campaigns, newsletters, and share them on social networks and integrate with web services. The real power is in the tracking and list management. You will be able to see bounces, clickthrough rates, unopened emails etc.. Email is becoming increasingly difficult to break. Spam compliance is another big reason to use this instead of CCing your entire address book!

8. WordPress – A complete content management system that you can use to run your website on WordPress.com or host it just about anywhere!  There are literally hundreds of themes available to make your site look just the way you want it to.  Plug-ins are out there that can do nearly anything you can think of.  The best part is that you don’t need to be a web “guru” to get set up and running with WordPress!

9. Square – allows users to collect credit card payment by plugging a reader into a phone or an iPad.  Perfect for business that do a small or sporadic amount of credit card transactions, or that complete the majority of those transactions “in the field”.  A great alternative to the complication and cost of a traditional merchant account.

10. Hootsuite – HootSuite is a platform which helps you manage multiple social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn) in one easy to view interface.  It also gives you access to configurable analytics and feedback.
