Typically, when you call us with a question about parts pricing and/or availability for your Macbook, we will ask you for the computers serial number.  Why?  Because Apple has designed the serial number to be an easy and convenient way to determine several bits of information about your computer, without revealing any personally identifiable details.

How To Find Your Serial Number

On most computers with Mac OS X, you can find the serial number in the “About This Mac” window. When you have the serial number from your computer, there are multiple ways to determine your product model.

You can also, depending on your model of computer,  find the serial number on the back of the case or inside the battery bay.

If you still have the original packaging for your MacBook Pro, you can find the serial number on the barcode label that is affixed to the packaging, or on the original receipt.

What Information Does Your Serial Number Provide

Primarily, your computers serial number provides the repair technician with the most efficient way to access several specific identifiers that give us information about your computers original  hardware & operating system configuration.  For example:

  1. Model Name & Identifier
  2. Processor name & speed
  3. Number of processors & cores
  4. Originally installed memory
  5. Bus speed

Here is a link to a website where you can enter your serial number for information on your model of computer –  EveryMac.com and here is the Apple Support version.

We utilize this information to speed up the process of locating compatible parts, pricing, and checking for any model specific known issues.

About This Mac

You can find a wealth of information about your Mac in the Overview window of About This Mac. This will give you currently configured specifications, rather than what the machine originally shipped with. Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen and select About This Mac. There you can see the model and identifier, processor, memory and serial number. Other tabs offer detailed information about your monitors, hard drive space usage and installed RAM. Older versions of Mac OS look a bit different, and you may need to create a System Profiler Report to get the detailed information.

Creating a System Profiler Report

Sometimes when investigating a computer issue, more detailed information can be vital.  You can help to speed up that process also by providing what’s called a System Profiler report.  You do it by following the following steps:

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Select Applications -> Utilities.
  3. Double-click the System Profiler utility.

Launchpad folders

  1.     In the menu bar of Mac OS X, select File and then Save as… from the open menu.
  2.    Select the place to save the file in the Where field.
  3.    In the File Format field, select System Profiler 4.0 (XML).
  4.   Click on the Save button.

If you are running Yosemite, the following instructions apply for you:

To get the System Information report, follow these steps:

  1. In the Dock, select Launchpad  -> Other
  1.     Click System Information.
  2.     On the Menu Bar, click File -> Save.
  3.     In the dialog box that opens next, specify the file name and the file location. Add a tag if necessary.
  4.     Click Save.

Then it’s just a simple matter of either emailing the report to us, or printing it out!
