By now, you should know that if you are on the internet, your computer needs to be protected from malicious viruses and malware/spyware.  We mentioned some ways to do that in our previous blog post “Your Computer Needs You (Why?)”.  Today, we’d like to expand on that some and answer the one question we get the most often:  Which anti-virus is the best?

To be honest, it’s all subjective.  Some anti-virus applications are better at some aspects and not as good at others.  It’s really depends on who you are asking.  Even here at Geek Easy Computers, we all have our own preferences.  What’s really important to understand, is that no anti-virus will stop everything 100% of the time.  There has to be a combination of protection and internet behavior that avoids common pitfalls and traps of viruses and malware.  That being said, we carry what are widely (arguably) considered three of the top commercial anti-virus applications currently available.  I make the distinction of “commercial” because, yes, there are several free anti-virus solutions available.  Some of those free options are pretty good, such as Panda Cloud Anti-virus.  The difference is no matter how good a free application is, it’s not going to have the security, reliability, and customer assistance that a commercial product will.

The three main anti-virus applications we carry are:

Norton Anti-Virus – currently rated as the #1 or #2 on most reviewers lists.  Norton has been around forever and this version is rock solid.  Also available for Macs.

Kaspersky – rated in the top 3 or top 5 in nearly all reviews lists.  Kaspersky has a good reputation and is a favorite for many users.

Bit Defender – although a “younger” application than Kaspersky or Norton, Bit Defender garnered great reviews and is currently rated in the top five of anti-virus programs.

We also carry commercial malware protection, which most basic level anti-virus does not include, in the form of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro.  Pairing this software with any of the 3 above mentioned anti-virus applications will give your computer the complete protection it needs to combat today’s information predators. All 3 of the above brands have more advanced “suites” that do include antivirus, anti-malware, and firewall, and search protection.
