Cloud Storage…Why Should I Use It?

At Geek Easy Computers, we see too many clients with failed or failing hard drives with no backup system in place! It’s a tragedy because data recovery is not guaranteed and can be expensive when it does work. Today there is really no excuse for not having some type of regular backup in place. Especially with the availability and ease of use of cloud storage. With this post, we hope to show you why you should be using the cloud.

What is Cloud Storage?
Cloud storage is storing your data on hardware in a remote physical location, which can be accessed from any device via the internet. Clients send their files to a data server maintained by a cloud provider instead of (or as well as) storing it on their own hard drives.

The most important features of cloud storage are:

  • All data is stored outside of your network
  • It can be accessed over the Internet or through built-in synchronization tools
  • Data can be accessed from any device and location by authorized users

If you store your data in cloud storage, you won’t need to carry around a flash drive or external hard drive. You’ll be able to access that data from any location that has Internet access. Other “pros” for using cloud storage are:

  1. Usability: Nearly all cloud storage services have desktop folders for Macs and PCs. This allows users to drag and drop files between the cloud storage service and their local storage.

  1. No maintenance: Servers require constant maintenance, and this means that the company has to employ IT staff to manage them. Thanks to cloud storage, businesses can save a lot of money on maintenance since their data is stored on servers under the control of third-party providers.

  1. Data Protection: An important reason to move to the cloud is for better protection of your data, especially in the event of a natural disaster. Cloud services keep your data stored in multiple data centers decreasing the likelihood that everything could be destroyed by a flood, fire, hurricane, etc.

  1. Security: The use of advanced security features makes the cloud virtually the safest place to keep your data other than a fully encrypted local hard drive. There are options for storing any type of sensitive data in the cloud securely.

  1. Redundancy: We can’t overstate the importance of having redundant copies of data stored in the cloud somewhere. There are plenty of backup services to choose from, and we recommend that you take advantage of these providers.

Backing up your data is the single best way to prevent data loss, and using cloud storage is arguably the easiest way to do it. Have questions? Call your local cloud storage experts at Geek Easy Computers!
