Geek Easy Computers 2012 – Year in Review

It’s 2013!  Happy New Year!  Where did 2012 go and doesn’t it seem like we were just celebrating the beginning of 2012? Well you know the old saying “Time flies when you’re having fun!”.  2012 has been a wild ride for us here at Geek Easy Computers, but overall it’s been a fun and exciting trip!

2012 brought lots of growth for Geek Easy and in response we were able to add 2 new technicians in Jon and Peter. It also brought lots of changes which we implemented to make us more efficient in providing quality service to you, our customers.

Last year also brought many changes and new technology in the world of computing; many of which we addressed in our blog on https://geek-easy.com/blog.  Below are some of the highlights from those posts and more!

One of the major events of 2012 was the advent of the FBI Virus and it’s ever growing list of variants. After seeing computer after computer come in infected with that same virus, Geek Easy put together a preventative and virus removal guide for our customers, to educate them on not only how to remove the virus once infected, but how to avoid it!  The guide can be found here: FBI Virus Guide.

Another major event occurred when Wired journalist Mat Honan’s Apple ID was hacked and his entire online identity stolen.  Two teenage hackers infiltrated the Apple, Twitter and Gmail accounts of Mat Honan, posting offensive comments to his Twitter and wiping clean the writer’s MacBook Air, iPhone and iPad. The violation exposed a glaring flaw in Apple’s security and spurred them to change policy. “…Apple users will only be able to reset their passwords online and not over the telephone with an AppleCare specialist; the company is apparently working on a more secure telephone password reset method, and until that method is complete, password resets will be online-only, through the company’s iForgot service. “.  It also inspired us to post about perceived security in the Cloud and protecting your online identity!  We also covered how to create secure passwords, and even how to protect yourself on Facebook with Five Essential Facebook Security Settings.

A topic that seemed to pop up frequently is the arguable “Death of the Desktop Operating System”.  In a world that is increasing becoming a mobile one, the future of the desktop computer is legitimately in question.  In our post, we have an in-depth discussion about that future and what it means to us as consumers.

An announcement that sent ripples through the computer consumer populace, was when Google announced that Google Docs would no longer be free for new business users.  The paid version of Google Apps will only apply to new customers. Those already using a free account will not be forced to pay the annual $50 fee per user that newcomers will be charged. Google specified the difference between the premium enterprise and free version of Google Apps, emphasizing that the latter is aimed toward business needs.  Earlier in the year, Geek Easy Computers posted an article discussing cloud based services such as Google Drive, DropBox, and similar applications.  You can check it out here:  Cloud Storage 101: What is it?

There were also two major debuts this year, from the two biggest players in the computer industry, Apple and Microsoft.  Apple was the first with the announcement of Mountain Lion OS X.  With new features such as Airplay Mirroring, Built-in sharing, Diction, Facebook integration, Game Center, and iCloud, Mountain Lion is poised to be the most popular OS upgrade yet for Apple.  Later, in the 3rd quarter of 2012, Apple’s chief rival made an announcement of their own.  Microsoft introduced Windows 8.  It was met with decidedly mixed reviews.  Many said it was too tablet-centric.  That it was difficult to use if you did not possess a computer built for the OS, with a touchscreen.  Alongside the OS debut, Microsoft also introduced the Surface table.  It comes in two flavors.  A beefy (specifications wise) version running full Windows 8, and a “lite” version which runs a scaled back version of Windows 8 called Windows RT.  This further division has caused some negative feedback also, as the two versions are not really interchangeable. The Surface RT doesn’t even support native Windows Apps, and Microsoft did a poor job of explaining that important distinction.

Apple also debuted some hardware, in the form of the iPad mini.  It was and still is wildly popular with not only current Apple fans but many new adopters who fell in love with its portable size, battery life, and spectacular screen.  But it also left some owners of previous iPad owners with feelings of betrayal as they had just recently purchased the “New” full size iPad.

As you can see 2012 was a year chocked full of excitement, drama, and new technologies.  Here’s to 2013 being even more exciting with more new technology to look forward too!  The crew at Geek Easy Computers would like to thank all of our customers and fans for staying with us in 2012 and helping us to grow and succeed, and to the community here in Kalamazoo, MI.  We eagerly anticipate serving you in the new year!  Thanks to all of you!!
