Do I Need This Patch?

Do I need to download this “patch”?

It’s a question almost every “computer guy/girl” gets asked frequently. Usually because the “asker” was just interrupted by a message stating something like “Java update X.XX available for download” followed by a link or update button. Most programs that frequently update will present a message similar to this when an update is available, unless it is auto-updating.

A perfect example of this is the recent emergency update for Java, which we highly recommend (https://bit.ly/PSBXip) Java is an application that runs in the background, that enables small programs to run in the web based environment. As new programs are developed with different and more complex language, you need to update your java for it to be compatible with the language the developers have used. Normally this happens at fairly regular and predictable intervals. The update yesterday was classified an “emergency” update. This is because it was an urgently needed update that fell outside of the normal update schedule. The reason for the update was that a “hole” in the code was found that could theoretically be manipulated for nefarious ends. So an update was issued to immediately “patch” and fix the anomaly.

The answer to the question? For the most part, yes. But do so with discretion. Always verify that the patch is legitimate, either by going to the developers website or by checking reputable websites, or by asking your local computer professional, like the guys at Geek Easy Computers! Lately, more and more malicious software is being designed to “spoof” or mimic legitimate programs, updates, or notifications.
