Storm Season

Yep its that time of year again when thunderstorms & lightning are more apt to happen than not.  This is also the time of year when you when we see more surge damaged computers and mobile devices.

The easiest way to protect your computer and other electronics is also the most over-looked or taken for granted.  The ubiquitous Surge Protector.  One of the simplest purchases that can provide protection for some of your most expensive items.  Not only your computer but your flat screen TV, your stereo, your game systems.  All of these devices are subject to electrical surge damage.

A Surge Protector is a device that is designed to protect PCs, servers, network equipment, audio/video equipment, computer peripherals and other electronic devices from damaging power surges and line noise interference. A Surge Protector usually includes multiple outlets and a power cord, allowing you to connect multiple components to a single power outlet.

Almost as bad as not having a surge protector, is buying a cheap one that offers no real protection.  When buying a surge protector, there are a few things you should look for:

  • how many outlets does it have? Figure out what you’re going to be plugging into it beforehand.  try to minimize the number of surge protectors you have to use.
  • the amount of protection! Surges are measured in Joules.  The more the better. A minimum of 300 joules per outlet is good.
  • what devices are you plugging into it? Computer, Monitor, TV, stereo, coaxial cable, phone cable, Cat5 etc.  Make sure the surge protector can protect your equipment at ALL inputs!
  • how long is the cord? Will it reach all your devices?
  • what warranty does the company offer if it fails and your equipment is damaged?

One problem with surge protectors is that they can burn out with one good surge. This is why it’s good to get a protector with an indicator light that tells you whether or not it’s functioning properly.

These power strips range a great deal in quality and capacity (as we’ll see in the next section). There are three basic levels of power strip surge protectors:

  • Basic power strip – These are basic extension cord units with five or six outlets. Generally, these models provide only basic protection.
  • Better power strip – For $15 to $25 you can get a power strip surge protector with better ratings and extra features.
  • Surge station – These large surge protectors fit under your computer or on the floor. They offer superior voltage protection and advanced line conditioning. Most models also have an input for a phone line, to protect your modem from power surges, and may feature built-in circuit breakers. You can get one of these units for as little $30, or you can spend upward of $100 for a more advanced model.

Basically, a little research and diligence and you can breathe easier during this stormy season and the rest of the year.
