2011: The Best Of…. and the Worst of…

The end of 2011 is almost here.  We’ve made through the most stressful of the holidays and there’s nothing left but to party like its… 2012.  A lot happened this year so I put together a list of some of the top best and worst of 2011!

The Best...(in no specific order)

  • iPhone 4S – Love it or hate it, you can’t deny this is the best iPhone ever.  In my opinion, it is also the best looking phone period.  Apple makes eye candy no doubt.  As for the specs though, even the 4S still lags a bit behind the curve.  No 4G? Seriously?
  • iPad 2 – yes Apple has 2 products on my list.  Why?  Because they rock!  The iPad 2 is more of the stuff that made the original iPad such a monster hit.  Lighter, faster, with that cool magnetic cover.  Other tablets have quite a ways to go to give Apple any real competition!
  • Kindle Fire – First there was the Nook.  The Kindle Fire took everything the Nook did right and made it better.  The biggest selling point is that its directly attached to Amazon, arguably the largest, most diverse “store” on the planet.  Simple, easy to use interface, awesome web browser, a media dispensary! Only real downside it the lack of processor power.
  • Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) – with this latest update, Windows Phone demands to be taken seriously as a mobile OS contender alongside iOS, Android, and to a much lesser extent RIM.  Easy multitasking, combined mail, upgraded camera software, battery management, live tiles, and much much more.  Over 500 upgrades to be specific.  Easy of use and just plain working,  is slowly winning over users every day.
  • Asus – To use a cliche, this company is truly like wine… it gets better every year!  They consistently put out impressive product at a variety of price points.  They have the BEST warranty in the computer industry currently.  2 year GLOBAL warranty with one Accidental Damage claim.  Accidental damage!!  No one covers that.. but Asus.
The Worst…(also in no specific order)
  • Blackberry Playbook – tragedy from start to finish.  So much potential, horrible execution.  First delayed, then launched missing critical productivity apps (email, contacts, and calendar – really?).  Sales were so poor they had to drop the price from $499 to only $199 and it still didn’t help much.  RIM lost an estimated 485 million on that faux pas!
  • Motorola Xoom – the supposed “iPad Killer”.  Priced too high, with an unstable, incomplete OS (early Android 3.0) it was doomed from the start.  “Motorola managed to ship only 100,000 Xooms in the third quarter of 2011. How many iPads shipped in the same time period? 11 million.” – Huffingtonpost.com
  • Qwikster – what was Netflix thinking?  We may never know.  Luckily they came to their senses pretty quickly under the flood of negative feedback the move brought them.  Netflix wisely re-thought the splitting or the home delivery and streaming sides of their business model.
  • Web OS  – one of the most promising mobile OSes, it was saddled with hardware that never matched its potential.  From the ill fated cellphones of its origin to the doomed Hp TouchPad it seemed like Web OS was destined to fail.  Hewlett-Packard finally open sourced Web OS so here’s hoping some enterprising developers can keep it alive.
  • Android Patent Lawsuits – it almost seems like Android versus the world. Apple, Oracle, British Telecom, Microsoft and others have filed “patent infringement” suits against Google.  Android is dominating the mobile OS market by sheer numbers and its competitors are using the patent system stymie that growth.  In a year of such innovation in mobile technology, this type of  legal  “fighting” only puts a black eye on the industry.
I dont know about you, but I’m looking forward to new breakthroughs in 2012.  Here’s to a Happy New Year to you all!!
