Buying a computer for the first time can be an intimidating process especially if you don’t really know what you need.  The biggest mistake you can make is shopping for a computer by price alone.  Obviously, unless you are independently wealthy, cost is definitely going to figure into the choice.  But choosing a PC solely based on price practically guarantees that you ultimately will be dissatisfied with the system.  The following steps are a good guide to choosing a new computer.

1.  What will you mostly be using your computer for?  If all you are going to primarily surf the web, Facebook and email, then you wont need as robust of a system than if you were going to play resource intensive games & videos.

• Processor – this is your PCs overall computing power and speed.  Thus the higher speed and number of cores, the better (i.e. Intel Dual-Core i3 2.8Ghz < Intel i7 Quad-Core 3.2Ghz).

• RAM – this is what allows your computer to multitask more and adds to the overall speed of the computer.  You’re going to want a minimum of 2GB if you’re running Windows 7.  4GB or more is recommended if you are going to be gaming or doing anything with video or manipulating large photo files.

• Hard Drive – this is where your computer stores everything! So again, bigger is better.  250GB is the recommended minimum size.  For gamers and video collectors, a 1TB HD is a better choice!
