Mac Tune Up

You’ve seen it happen – a once sleek and sexy, cutting-edge Mac has succumb to the woes of age and doesn’t feel as fast as it used to be. Programs load slower, it groans when you assault it with too many tabs while browsing the Internet and let’s not talk about how long it takes to boot OS X these days. Chances are good that, even if your Mac is quickly growing in age, it could see a significant speed boost from a Mac tune-up.

There are plenty of programs out there that can help increase the speed of your Mac, and one neat, free program is a tool called Monolingual. Monolingual can speed up your boot times and free up memory for use by other programs by eliminating extra code and languages from Mac OS. When you load Monolingual, it will show you a list of installed languages that you can pick and choose from to remove one’s you’ll never use. By default it selects minor languages and leaves major ones like English, French and German alone. So unless you foresee switching over to Basque in the future, it’s safe to let the program remove it’s default selections.

You can also use Monolingual to remove unneeded architectures from the operating system. By default, new installs of Mac OS X will often come with code for both Intel based processors and the Motorola G3s, G4s and G5s. These extra architectures takes up space on your hard drive and add to operating systems code information you won’t need when using your Mac. Monolingual detects your architecture and selects all unnecessary ones for removal. By running Monolingual, you can often see a mild speed boost and free up disk space if you’re running low.

Another thing to consider is the amount of widgets you have running in the background. It might seem like an excellent idea to have Tetris available at any moment or a BBC news feed with groundbreaking stories from the Pyrenees, but every one of those little programs is running constantly whether you can see them in the dashboard or not. By eliminating widgets you don’t frequently use, your system will have more available memory for other programs.

If you’ve tried all that and still need some speed, stop in to Geek Easy. We offer a full Mac tune-up service for $70. We perform the same cleaning of Monolingual and strip unneeded code out of applications as well. We run a variety of maintenance and cleaning scripts to purge temporary or cached files that are not in use as well as verifying and repairing the file system and permissions. We take a look at your login items, which are more programs that run every time you start your Mac, and we remove unneeded speed launchers and updaters. We make sure your system software is up to date and leave you with a Mac that feels younger and invigorated. We offer to fully uninstall any programs you would like to get rid of to make sure they don’t leave files stranded behind, and we  do a hardware assessment to see if your computer could benefit from a cheap, immediate upgrade.

It doesn’t take a Genius to realize the benefit of  Geek Easy’s Mac tune-up, and your computer will be appreciate feeling sexy again.
