Mac Power Management

Power management (laptop cords AC adapters)
Ever turn on your computer to draft an important email, or look up directions only to get warned that your battery is about to die? That race against the clock that we’ve all performed on more occassions than we’d like to admit is a part of life we have become accustomed to, but can probably be avoided. I’m sure you or a friend has had to deal with a laptop that just wouldn’t charge unless you ‘wiggled the cord’, but did you know that this is a common problem and easily fixable? Ever make it to the coffee shop and find out you forgot your AC adapter (power cord) at home? That ones pretty easy to avoid as well.

What some people don’t know is the frequency that DC jacks themselves can be damaged on older iBooks and Powerbooks that lack the MagSafe power connector. The DC jack is the place on a laptop where that power cord plugs in. These can wear out over time or through rough removals. They can be bent or broken out of place by dropping the laptop on the plugged-in cord or walking by it and bending it out of socket. No amount of AC adapter replacement, duct tape or shamanic ritual (depending on where you’re computing from) is going to repair an ailing DC jack. Although much less common, the magsafe connector on newer mac laptops isn’t immune to this problem either.

But all is not lost! When a DC jack is damaged, it can be replaced. The process involves stripping down and installing the new jack. The process is labor-intensive, but the parts themselves are typically really cheap. We offer DC jack repair for Macs between $125 and $200 depending on the laptop, and we let you know which one it will be before you commit to the repair. That cost covers the 1-2 hours our technicians spend stripping down the laptop and the part all-in-one. If you’re Mac laptop is running 10.3 or higher, it’s probably still worth the cost of repair, and we will let you know your full range of options in advance. It’s something to consider before dishing out $1000 or more for a new Mac when your current laptop may have quite a bit of life left in it.

We also stock replacement MagSafe AC adapters for the most common Macs and can order nearly any charger or battery for between $60 and $120 depending on part. Having a backup is always a good idea if your battery dies or you forget your charger while working on an important project or are stuck in the middle of the Serengeti. If your cell phone is important enough to have a backup, isn’t your Mac important enough to warrant some redundancy? Stop in at Geek Easy and let us help you harness the full power of your laptop computer.
